Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye terrier from Scotland, faithfully accompanied Edinburgh policeman John Gray on his daily rounds. When Gray suddenly died, Bobby is said to have loyally slept by his grave for more than 14 years. After Edinburgh presented San Diego a copy of its celebrity dog statue, we gave Edinburgh a duplicate of Bum that is now on display at the foot of Edinburgh Castle. Until July 7, the bronze canines have been resting quietly in the pocket park at Fourth Avenue and Island Avenue behind the Gaslamp Museum. Deciding it was time for them to speak up, the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation, with funding from the San Diego-Edinburgh Sister City Society, has incorporated technology popular in Europe. All one has to do is hold a smartphone up to each statue’s bar code and the dogs will tell their stories via an actor’s voice.
