Born in 1891, in the Republic of Georgia, Galaktion Tabidze was a major Georgian poet in the early 20th century. Much of his work was written during periods of strictly enforced censorship that demanded highly patriotic and communistic themes, by Soviet Union however, his poems included local folklore, loss and regret, bitterness, isolation, lovelessness, love and even insanity. Influenced by Baudelaire, Poe and the Symbolists, he stands alongside Rilke, Yeats and Apollinaire as one of the great poets of his age. His writings profoundly influenced all subsequent generations of Georgian poets.

During the Soviet authorities repressions he came under heavy pressure, his wife was executed and he was tortured. Those years plunged him into depression and alcoholism. He was placed in a psychiatric hospital in Tbilisi, where he committed suicide.

He has been dubbed as The king of Poets by generations of poets and general public in Georgia. Tabidze authored thousands of poems that established him as one of the greatest Georgian poets with an immense impact on modern Georgian literature. His archive of about 100,000 items in the Literary Museum in Tbilisi still awaits full investigation. His works has been translated into Russian, French, English, and German.
